Sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India

Coimbatore is a city of wetlands having around 28 wetlands that connect the Noyyal River it is one of the important resources that the city has. However in recent times exploitation of this resource has resulted in endangering the very existence of the wetlands that provide us with invaluable services.

Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) has been observing the World Wetlands Day since 1999 and has always conducted some or the other awareness program weaving activities around the wetlands in Coimbatore. This year too SACON and the SACON ENVIS centre (wetland ecosystems) collaborated with the Karunya University to observe the World Wetlands Day i.e. 2nd February, 2013 at the Elohim Hall at Karunya University during 3.30 pm till 5.30 pm. As per the Ramsar theme for the year "Wetlands Take Care of Water" and the UN theme on 'International Year for water cooperation' the program for the day was planned accordingly; keeping the CEPA in mind.

Dr. Maya Mahajan (Head Department of Continuing and Extension Education) and the host introduced the audience to the Ramsar and the importance of World Wetlands Day. This was followed by Dr. Goldin Quadros (Senior Scientist - Wetland Ecology Division, SACON) who highlighted the relevance of the Ramsar Theme to Coimbatore and the importance of the Wetlands given the fact that Coimbatore has the fastest depleting ground water as per the UN report.

The Poster on "Threatened birds of Coimbatore wetlands" designed by Dr. Goldin Quadros and the SACON ENVIS team had some adaptations from the Ramsar theme was released by the Dean Academic affairs Prof. Michael Keirmer along with Dr. Patrick Gomes, Director School of Biotechnology. A film on wetlands and their sustainable use was also screened on the occasion. The students from Karunya School presented a skit on the wetlands and two students shared their views on the conservation and importance of wetlands.

The program was attended by the Principal, teachers and the students from the Karunya School as well as the students and faculty from Karunya University along with the research scholars and faculty from SACON. The program was hosted by Dr. Maya Mahajan along with the members of the Nature club of Karunya while Dr. Mahendiran Mylswamy (Scientist, Wetland Ecology Division, SACON) proposed the vote of thanks.
